On October 15th, 2010, KSL Channel 5 reports that Chris Ello, a color analyst for San Diego State University and a talk show host on radio station XTRA, went on a tirade and blasted Brigham Young University on the air during his program on XTRA. Apparently he took it hard when BYU ambushed SDSU in Provo 24-21 just one week after SDSU clobbered Utah State at home, 41-7. His choicest remarks were reserved for the BYU football team. KFAN 1320AM has archived the 2:39 minute audio; it is embedded below:

Initially, Ello criticizes the BYU broadcasting team for allowing a BYU videographer into the booth; he believes it may have influenced a call against SDSU after a key play where SDSU's B.J. Williams thought he recovered a fumble, but officials ruled otherwise. He also thinks the Mountain West Conference should stick it to BYU and screw them "endlessly" since they're bailing out after the season and going independent.
Then he gets serious. Ello says he's been in Provo many times, and takes issue with BYU talking about honor. He says they have no honor and play football with no honor. He says that dozens of SDSU players with whom he's talked characterize BYU as the "dirtiest, slimiest, most ill-behaved" football team they've ever played. Ello also says the SDSU players tell him about racial comments BYU players direct toward them during a typical game that would get them arrested in some parts of the world, and would at least get the crap beat out of them elsewhere. He concludes by saying that BYU is nothing but a front for hypocrisy, and he hates BYU and everything they stand for.
He does not mention the phrases "Mormon" or "Latter-day Saint" during his tirade, so I'm not going to accuse him of anti-Mormon bias offhand. Thus I believe his issue is not with Mormonism per se, but with the perceived failure of the BYU team to live up to advertised LDS values. It is unlikely he'll be given the Rick Sanchez treatment, though, and he probably shouldn't be fired.
This outburst has triggered considerable discussion on Chris Ello's Facebook page. As of this post, there has been no official reaction from BYU.
The Deseret News is now reporting that Chris Ello has apologized in part for his remarks. On Friday, Ello told KSL Newsradio he owed an apology to a lot of the people in Provo for the things he said, or in the way that they were said, and he also apologized on his radio show. "A lot of what I said on my radio show was kind of drawn from emotion — and a lot of frustration, emotion that I think I feel and a lot of San Diego State people feel," Ello told KSL. "That said, anytime you let emotion enter into it, I think you say a lot of things that can go offline, go off-course, and I think a lot of my emotional comments went so far off the course that they kind of missed the target I was intending...My intention was not to attack BYU, but more to attack this particular situation". But Ello didn't back down from his allegations of racial slurs.
