Remember the LDS chapel in Orangevale, California? On November 7th 2008, just after the elections, vandals struck and spray-painted "No on 8" on the outside of the chapel.
Unfortunately, the Orangevale chapel has been struck again - this time by one of the congregation members. A 15-year-old girl has allegedly confessed to setting fire to the chapel, and disclosed that she considers herself a "devil worshipper". On Tuesday September 15th, 2009, firefighters were called to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints chapel at 7950 Hazel Ave. shortly after 7 A.M. in response to a reported fire. By the time they arrived, church members had already extinguished the fire, which caused an estimated $2,000 in damage to pews and carpet. Stories published by the Sacramento Bee, KSBW Channel 8, and KXTV Channel 10 (with photos).
While firefighters were securing the scene, investigators began interviewing LDS members. At least 30 congregation members were on the scene. Information derived in the interviews led investigators to question the teenage girl. The girl then allegedly admitted setting the fire, claiming that she hated the Church and that she worshipped the devil. Apparently there were 30-50 people on the church grounds but nobody except the arsonist was in the chapel when the fire broke out. The girl allegedly set the fire, then reported it to other LDS members. She has been arrested on suspicion of felony arson to a commercial structure.
While the suspect has not been identified, a discussion thread on Mormon Apologetics led me to the Channel 8 story, which identifies the suspect's mother as Annette Hilt. Hilt just happens to have a Facebook page HERE.
