Utah District 10 State Senator Chris Buttars (R-West Jordan) is now a national superstar, thanks to the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC). His name shows up in their quarterly Summer 2009 Intelligence Report.
Senator Buttars makes the big time by being quoted in the section entitled, "Hate in the Mainstream: Quotes from the Right", in reference to his remarks about homosexuality in the Reed Cowan documentary back in February 2009. This issue was previously discussed HERE. Here is the SPLC quote:
"Homosexuality will always be a sexual perversion. … What are the morals of a gay person? You can't answer that because anything goes. … [Gays] are probably the greatest threat to America going down I know of."
— Utah State Sen. CHRIS BUTTARS, quoted in a documentary released Feb. 17, in comments that led to his being removed as chairman of the state Judiciary Committee.
Note that other so-called "hate quotes" cited are from people like Rush Limbaugh, Michael Savage, and Pat Buchanan. This is even more proof that the SPLC has progressed far beyond their original charter of persecuting "white nationalists" and are now targeting all public personas on the right. It is because of this change of character that any historical comparisons from the SPLC on so-called "hate crimes" must be called into question; their terms and definitions have changed with the passage of time, corrupting their standard of comparison.
I seriously doubt that Chris Buttars is even aware of the SPLC's new infatuation with him, nor would he particularly care. Most likely, Buttars wouldn't even want to dignify their opinion with a reply.
The rest of the Intelligence Report is an interesting and sometimes amusing read, although loaded with exaggeration and spin. Once again, in this story, they misrepresent the Council of Conservative Citizens (CCC) as a "white supremacist" group and regurgitate the infamous quote about blacks being a "retrogade species of humanity", wrongfully attributed to the CCC. The Council has said that was a phrase uttered by an individual member which did not reflect the official attitude of the organization.
And on the CCC website, I discovered a video of a press conference conducted by Wayne Lutton of Social Contract back on January 13th, 2009, in which he exposes the SPLC as one of the ten worst charities:
The SPLC is increasingly becoming irrelevant - and desperate.
