Provo Gangbanger Saul Cristobal Arrested For The 27th Time In Three Years After Gang Fight In Riverside Park In Provo, Utah

One of two people arrested after a gang fight in Riverside Park in Provo, Utah is a career criminal who has been arrested 27 times during the past three years. Saul Cristobal is a textbook example of revolving door justice.

According to the Salt Lake Tribune, the fight took place on Wednesday May 20th, 2009. It began when eight men from two feuding gangs met at Riverside Park, located at 1260 West 600 North, around 5:30 P.M. Some of them, who ranged in age from 17 to 27, were armed with bats; two carried knives. Outraged bystanders called police as one man was stabbed in the leg and shoulder and slashed on his chest. The fighters scattered when they saw his injuries. When officers arrived they caught three of the men.

The injured man was taken to Utah Valley Regional Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries, but the other man in the knife fight, also thought to be hurt, was not found. The men are all known to police, but they have not been cooperative in the investigation. However, since the Tribune first reported this story, KSL Channel 5 now identifies the two individuals arrested. Detectives tracked down Lonny High and Saul Cristobal and arrested on them on suspicion of gang enhanced aggravated assault. They have been charged with second degree felony riot and aggravated assault. The charges also carry a gang-related enhancement. KSL news video embedded below:

Cristobal, who reportedly goes by the street name of "Droopy", has now been arrested 27 times in three years. In my previous post from February 2008, I discussed his involvement in an assault at the Wal-Mart in Orem (further covered by the Deseret Morning News and KSL Channel 5). At the time, he had a record of 81 offenses. He was eventually incarcerated, then released in April 18th, 2009. But since his release, he has already been involved in one minor gang scuffle in Orem, and now allegedly in Wednesday's gang fight in Provo. Cristobal is repeatedly mollycoddled by tender-hearted judges who look at his boyish face and can't believe he's a hardened punk. And so the justice system has a revolving door for him.

Gang fights are becoming all too commonplace in Provo. On March 13th, a gangfight involving 13 people broke out at the Provo Town Centre; only one person was arrested. And gang activity is spreading throughout the rest of Utah Valley; in June 2008, one gangbanger was arrested riding a stolen tricycle down Orem Blvd.

Judges aren't the only problem. Provo Police may be spreading themselves too thin. The Provo Daily Herald has just editorially taken the Provo Police Department to task for running an Internet sting operation. Provo officers noticed ads on websites that were promoting sex services in Utah Valley and decided they needed to deter such activities. They set up phony online ads on the websites, suggesting that women would be available for work on May 7th. That day, nine men showed up at a hotel where two female officers posed as hookers. The men were arrested and cited on charges of patronizing a prostitute, a class B misdemeanor.

Excuse me, but when we have hardened punks like Saul Cristobal running around, the police shouldn't be wasting time on Internet prostitution stings. I realize the johns may pose a lesser physical threat to the cops and make for an easier, cheaper arrest, but the cops' job is to PROTECT and SERVE. They need to deal with the serious crime first. At least the state legislature made some progress in updating Utah's laws during the 2009 session.

Saul Cristobal is a hardened criminal with ZERO rehabilitational potential at this time. This means we lock him up and throw away the key until he makes the first move to show he's willing to change. Then we require him to prove it BEFORE we release him back into society. No other alternative will work.
