Deerfield, Illinois High School Assigned Gay Porn Novel To Students As Required Reading; Parents Go On The Warpath

Deerfield High School in Deerfield, Illinois, is under fire for having assigning the book Angels in America: A Gay Fantasia on National Themes to students as required reading. Unfortunately, the book is replete with profanity, an explicit description of a sex act involving Mother Theresa and some of the most graphic, vile and vivid depictions of homosexual anal sodomy every put in print. In addition, there are multiple uses of the word "nigger", which, while it doesn't rise to the same level of repugnance as porn and profanity, is still considered in poor taste. Full story published on the Michnews website. A new article published March 13th by WorldNetDaily not only covers this story, but also links to similar stories around the country.

When parents found out, they were outraged and they filed a formal complaint. “After almost 15 years of school advocacy and reviewing many objectionable books and curricula, I have never seen anything this vulgar and harmful to students,” Lora Sue Hauser, Executive Director of North Shore Student Advocacy (NSSA), told Concerned Women for America (CWA). Hauser also serves as the Schools Issue Advisor for the Illinois Family Institute.

NSSA complained to the State Attorney’s office of Lake County, Illinois, and they agreed that the book violated Illinois’ obscenity statute prohibiting adults from “distributing harmful materials to minors.” But, amazingly, Hauser was told by the State’s Attorney’s office that state and federal obscenity laws exempt school officials from prosecution under the "affirmative defense" provision.

The school offered an olive branch to the parents, changing it from a mandatory title to an “optional title,” meaning kids may still select the book for peer study under the direction of a teacher, but they cannot be required to read the book if they don't want to.

However, this compromise doesn't satisfy Matt Barber, the Policy Director for Cultural Issues for Concerned Women of America (CWA). He characterized assigning the book as "child abuse" and demanded sterner measures. “If Deerfield High School Principal Sue Hebson, Superintendent George Fornero or any of the teachers responsible for this outrage had any sense of responsibility, they would now resign on their own rather than making parents and taxpayers force them from their positions. Shame on them, and shame on Illinois School District 113", said Barber. Further legal action has not been ruled out.

The Culture Campaign blog tells us that Deerfield High School, located in an upscale suburban community on the North Shore of Chicago, has had a long history of presenting inappropriate curricula to students. They continue to have faculty who push their own personal agendas and are unresponsive to parents and taxpayers in the community. The administration has a very high turnover rate; 4 principals and 3 superintendents in 6 years.

Culture Campaign asks people to contact Deerfield High School, District 113 and the Lake County District Attorney to give your opinion on yet another violation of trust.

The Mission America website reveals that Deerfield High School is one of thousands of high schools nationwide likely to participate in the pro-gay "Day of Silence" in April. More information on how you can counter this event is posted HERE.

The Illinois Review blog also affirms that Deerfield High School has had a long history of presenting inappropriate curricula to students. According to them, Deerfield has gone even further: Last year, teachers made freshman students sign a "Confidentiality Agreement" in a class where they were allowing presentations by homosexual and transgendered students.

The homosexuals are fighting for your kids. Will you get off your ass and fight back?

The "Gay Porn Novel" you refer to was a play, probably the most famous and honored play of the 1990s. The author won a Pulitzer, and the HBO miniseries swept the Emmy awards in 2003.

Another example of child abuse under the guise of artistic expression and free speech. The consequences continue to dismantle the moral foundation of the society.

Have the parents checked into whether this trashy drivel of a book is actually on the list of recommended and accepted books to be used in the advanced placement courses by the National Advanced Placement group?? This seems to be completely at odds with any works even remotely endorsed by the high school A.P. program

You're all so stupid! It's not required reading, a letter was sent to the students and their parents, asking for permission to read it. If permission was not granted, the students would have to read another book without such themes. Not only that, only two classes of seniors were asked to read it. These seniors would be going off to college the next year, and I'm pretty sure that their parents wouldn't get permission forms for their child to read the book. They're eighteen! Not only that, I don't understand why everyone cares so much if it doesn't affect them or their children!

I currently attend Deerfield high school and I can personally vouch for the fact that the reading of "Angels in America" has caused a homosexual uprising in the school! Men are still having sex with each other in the hallways and it's almost been two years since the 20 kids read the book! Someone send help!
